Orthodontic Treatment and Whitening: What to Know
If you're currently in orthodontic treatment — braces or clear aligners like Invisalign — or have recently finished, there are a few things worth knowing about oral health and whitening.
Why Right After Treatment Is a Good Time to Consider Whitening
Braces can cover parts of the tooth surface during treatment, so staining sometimes develops unevenly around the brackets. Once braces come off or aligner treatment is complete, the whole tooth surface is visible again, which makes it a good time to consider whitening evenly across your smile.
Oral Hygiene During Orthodontic Treatment
Braces and clear aligners make brushing and flossing more challenging, and teeth are more prone to staining, decay and white spot lesions (visible marks caused by demineralisation) if plaque isn't well controlled during treatment. Gum inflammation (gingivitis) is also common, since brackets and wires make plaque more likely to build up along the gumline, where a toothbrush can't always reach easily. Aligners can also trap saliva and food particles against the tooth if not removed and cleaned regularly. Extra care with brushing technique and interdental cleaning matters more during orthodontic treatment than at other times — and if gums stay red, swollen or bleed easily despite good home care, it's worth mentioning at your next check-up or clean.
Why More Frequent Cleans Matter During Treatment
Because plaque control is harder with braces or aligners in place, regular professional cleaning through treatment can help manage this added risk by removing surface build-up that's difficult to reach at home. This is worth discussing with your orthodontist alongside your regular check-ups — many orthodontic practices don't offer general cleans in-house, so this is often arranged separately.
After Your Braces or Aligners Come Off
Once treatment is complete, a whitening consultation is a good next step to talk through which whitening option suits your newly aligned smile.
