Teeth whitening is suitable for most adults with healthy teeth and gums. A complimentary consultation is strongly recommended before treatment to assess your oral health, discuss your goals and determine the most suitable whitening approach to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
-
Healthy teeth and gums provide the best foundation for whitening. Existing dental issues should be addressed before treatment and results can vary depending on the cause and severity of staining.
-
Teeth whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
-
No. Teeth whitening only affects natural tooth structure. Existing fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding will not change colour and may need to be replaced if a closer shade match is desired.
-
The degree of whitening varies depending on factors such as your starting shade and the whitening method used. Your goals and expectations are discussed during your consultation, before treatment begins.
-
The whitening treatment itself takes up to 60 minutes and consists of 3–4 × 15-minute whitening rounds.
Please allow up to 90 minutes for your full appointment. This includes your consultation, preparation, treatment, aftercare and payment.

Private health insurance extras rebates may be available depending on your level of cover and health fund. On-the-spot claiming is available via HICAPS for eligible patients.

When performed by a registered dental practitioner using approved whitening products, teeth whitening is considered safe. At Sonréir, treatments are provided by a registered Oral Health Therapist, with your oral health and suitability assessed before treatment.

Some people experience temporary sensitivity during or after treatment, which typically settles within 24–48 hours. We use desensitising products and adjust treatment where appropriate to keep you comfortable.
-
When performed correctly using approved whitening products, teeth whitening should not damage healthy enamel. A consultation is completed prior to treatment to ensure whitening is appropriate for you.
-
Side effects are generally mild and temporary. The most common is tooth sensitivity. Some people notice dry or chapped lips from the retractor used to keep the mouth open during treatment. Rarely, the gums, lips or cheeks can become irritated if they come into contact with the whitening gel, which is why these areas are protected before treatment begins.
Teeth with cavities or leaking fillings can become symptomatic during whitening, so these should be treated beforehand. Some gradual settling of shade after treatment is also normal
-
For the first 24 hours following treatment, it is recommended to avoid foods and drinks that may stain teeth, including coffee, tea, red wine, curry and coloured sauces. Following this period, you can return to your normal diet.
-
Results from in-chair whitening generally last 6–12 months, although this varies between individuals. Factors such as smoking, coffee, tea and red wine can contribute to staining over time. Take-home whitening can be used between in-chair treatments to help maintain your results. Good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups and cleans also help keep your smile bright.
-
Common causes include coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, ageing, certain medications and poor oral hygiene.
