Interdental Brushes vs Floss: Which Is Better?
Even with perfect brushing technique, your toothbrush can't reach between your teeth. That's where a lot of plaque hides, and where decay and gum problems often start.
Why in between matters
The spaces between teeth are protected from your brush, your tongue and your saliva. Plaque left there can lead to bleeding gums, cavities between teeth and bad breath.
Interdental brushes
These are small brushes designed to slide between your teeth. For most people they're the easiest and most effective option because:
• they clean the whole space, including the slightly hollowed surfaces of the teeth
• they're easier to handle than floss, especially at the back
• gently push it all the way through and pull it out between each space
Floss
Floss is still useful where teeth sit very tightly together, often at the front. If an interdental brush won't fit without forcing it, floss is the better choice for that spot.
What about air or water flossers?
They can be a good option for some people, especially around braces, implants and bridges, or if you find brushes and floss hard to use. The best tool is the one you'll actually use every day.
Sizing is everything
Interdental brushes come in different sizes, and most people need more than one. The brush should fit snugly and feel like it's cleaning, but it should never need to be forced. A brush that's too small won't clean properly, and one that's too big can hurt your gums.
This is something I'm always happy to help with at your appointment.
A little bleeding at first?
That's common when you start. Bleeding is usually a sign the gums are inflamed, not that you're doing damage. With daily use it generally settles within a week or two. If it doesn't, let me know.
The bottom line
It's not really interdental brushes or floss. It's whichever cleans each space properly, used once a day.
