Sensitivity and Side Effects: What to Know Before You Whiten

Whitening is a well-established, safe treatment when carried out correctly — but like any treatment, it's worth knowing what to expect beforehand, including the possible temporary side effects.

Sensitivity
Sensitivity is the most common side effect. Some patients experience sensitivity in the first 24 hours after in-chair treatment, and it typically resolves within that time. A desensitising gel is provided as standard as part of your treatment to help manage this.

Gum and Lip Care

If soft tissue isn't fully protected during in-chair treatment, some patients experience mild, temporary gum irritation that resolves on its own. Dry lips are also common, from having the mouth open for an extended period — Vitamin E oil is applied during treatment to help with this.

If Sensitivity Lingers
While most sensitivity settles within 24 hours, it can linger for a few days for some people. If this happens, we recommend brushing with a sensitive toothpaste for the week following your whitening treatment, and holding off on any at-home whitening products until it settles. If it persists longer than that, or feels concerning, get in touch.
